“Visit us on the Web!”
May 5th, 2007 by TJ Etherton
I have been making incredible progress on back-end stuff recently and the little lady and I decided it was time to go out to register our domain name and get some cheap hosting. Dreamhost had an amazing deal on hosting, so we went with them for our hosting. I’ve read decent reviews, people seem pretty happy with them. They have a bunch of the bells and whistles as other hosting providers, but I cannot say I’m in love with their interface. I’m not sure how we’ll like them in the future, but the budget was the important part right now, so I can live with not loving a few little things here and there.
As far as choosing the domain name goes, we put the full staff on that part of the project a month or so ago. (both my wife and myself with some help from the kids - we sure pulled out the stops, didn’t we!)
We wanted some part of the name to signify that the site was meant for collectors. So we threw around a bunch of names that had collect, collection, or some variation of the spelling of those words. Collex, Collekshun, lecshun (that’s the one I hated the most!), and lots of others too.
We even threw around cool alternate language names like “Recoja”, which according to my 8 year old is Spanish for collect (at least I think it is, I don’t speak Spanish!). Verzamel and Opslag also were on the list, which apparently is Dutch for “Collect” and “Storage” respectively. I’m sure all of our future Dutch customers will be disappointed to know that those names didn’t even come close to winning…
We voted on all the different names on the list (whose .com domains were not taken), and “iKollect” won out with a 2-0 vote. Wow, a unanimous vote? You know that’s a good sign!
So Kate and I registered the domain, signed on for a year of hosting, and we are now the official owners of the iKollect.com domain. As they say, you can visit us on the web at … www.iKollect.com … Wow, life sure is good!
