Working on Less Than a Shoe-String Budget
Feb 20th, 2007 by TJ Etherton
Hey! So I’m back to writing about Financial Freedom. That was quite a little hiatus, but it feels good to be back working on this stuff that I love so much. I could have started earlier, but I really needed to get back in gear with my day job. It does after all pay the majority of the bills in our household. I really need that job. Even more than before. I need the paycheck, I need the health benefits. Boy do I really need those health benefits.
And for even more good business building news, any extra money we had to put towards a business was soaked up by miscellaneous medical costs, prescriptions, travel expenses, hotel rooms and lots of other stuff I never would have expected. So remember before when I said that my wife and I were going to be building this business on a shoestring? Well that shoestring has just been cut down to a thin little piece of sewing thread. When I look at buying a drink from the cafeteria at work, I think about how I can instead use that $1.50 to go towards this business I’m trying to build. So when I say that I’m doing this on a very limited budget, I am really not kidding! We have bills that have really built up on us. But we still have our house and other important things to us like that. I sure can see how people can get into serious financial trouble when someone in their family gets sick like that.
Anyway, enough of that dreary talk. I just wanted to mention it because all my focus for this business is now on “how to do it for very little money”. So if you are reading a post and you think “why is this chump not spending the $15 for some decent hosting?”, you’ll now know why.
Speaking of hosting, I found a great deal a bit ago for some really inexpensive hosting and domain name registration from Dreamhost. They are using the technology I want too, PHP and MySQL. I’ve been throwing around some company / web site ideas with my wife and we have an idea on what we want it to be.
In the old days (six months ago) I would have just registered the domain name even though I didn’t need it yet because I would have wanted to secure it and make sure nobody else got it on me. Instead I’m working on a tight budget, so I’m going with the “keep my fingers crossed and hope no-one else takes the domain name” approach.
So I guess it’s obvious why I’m not telling anyone what we want to name the site, right? I’ll mention what the domain name is right after it’s mine.
